Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for artwork and inspiration. Aunt Denise was a nurse who worked night shifts so that she could commit her time to writing, reading theatre, and various other pursuits. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective way to spread political activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was conscious of her social status and taught that she could express her thoughts by using the arts. While DuVernay lived in Compton with her parents, she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father was awed by the historical civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby community of Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Selma, Alabama led her later on to create a documentary about The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a student at Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded certificates in English as well as African American Studies. When she was still a student DuVernay started to become interested in producing in television journalism. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to look over the rubbish at the home by a member jury. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied with journalism so she decided to go into the public relations industry. DuVernay got her first job as a publicity specialist in an unassuming production studio after graduating from college. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency also created a variety of promotions and lifestyle networks like The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
